I'll take my boys out with it and put it to good use one day. Anyway, in 2009, the housing bubble burst here and we had purchased a home for an amount that we could afford and essentially, the home value dropped to what is should, a good one third and we had to short sale the home and I lost my rod making shop. About that time, I was looking for a recipe to make a 12' split cane pole that I could fish my farm ponds with, a sort of tenkara rod. A fellow rod making friend introduced me to TenkaraUSA and Daniel Galhardo. It was just what I needed. I stopped making fly rods, stopped fly fishing to learn tenkara in as deep of level as I could. Tenkara-Fisher the web site is what I made to learn. Far as I know using the Internet Archives, it is the second dedicated site after Daniel's for English readers outside of Japan. I have done a little fly fishing in salt water and a bit at my local river but it is a huge distraction to me now. I have not quit fly fishing yet I am not ready to commit to it yet, I have not found an application where I haven't been able to figure it out with a tenkara rod for small streams or even large western rivers. I can still cast a whole fly line (I use G.Loomis rods for serious distance) and love my reels but they are dusty for sure. Dave R, your comments are great and I enjoy them. Have fun in Estes Park. Colorado gets my regular attention and that area has been the target focus last few trips. I will get back soon to exploring the Conejos Valley and the alpine streams there. They are largely blank of fishermen and that is what I am interested in.Adam Trahanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05977180275024612362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4070418924223003503.post-22021061082638658882019-10-03T08:21:24.227-06:002019-10-03T08:21:24.227-06:00Adam I hope that I never have to choose between th...Adam I hope that I never have to choose between the two. If I had to give up western fly fishing it would be like saying goodbye to an old friend. For me it's all about the casting. Especially when fishing dry flies. But I also enjoy tenkara. My wife and I are heading to Estes Park CO this Saturday. I'm only taking my tenkara kit. Quite frankly I think had there been tenkara in this country some 50 years ago I may have never owned a western fly rod. It isn’t a sub form, it is every bit a discipline as western fly fishing. My buddy John Sachen who I taught tenkara to has really done well with his craft. Chris Theobald, another friend is really becoming quite a tenkara fisherman.
